Natalie Gulbis hungry for titles -- March 2, 2008
American glamour girl Natalie Gulbis has all the money,
endorsements and fame she needs. Now, it's titles she
craves.
After winning her maiden LPGA title at the Evian Masters
last year and pocketing more than $3 million in career
earnings, Gulbis said her sole focus was to iron out the
shortcomings in her game and to challenge for titles.
The American is currently in joint 13th place at the $2
million HSBC Women's Champions tournament in Singapore with
little chance of reeling in runaway leader Lorena Ochoa.
"I've got off to a slow start this year so I'm going to have
to grind to pick it up a little bit," the 25-year-old told
Reuters after her third round at the Tanah Merah Country
Club on Saturday.
Gulbis insisted she is no longer content just to be playing
on the biggest stage in women's golf. She wants to win.
"It's about being in contention every single week, having a
chance to win tournaments. That's what it's about now," she
said, adding that winning a major was definitely on her
radar.
"I've got to clean up my mistakes. Once I do that I'll be in
contention for sure."
Gulbis, whose best finish in a major was tied for third at
the Kraft Nabisco Championship in 2006, was full of praise
for the way world number one Ochoa was playing but believes
Annika Sorenstam will soon be back to her best after an
injury-hit 2007.
"Lorena has played incredibly well," she said. "Annika was
dominant for so many years. Now she's back healthy so it'll
be a good race this year."
Swede Sorenstam had won five consecutive Player of the Year
awards before being deposed by Mexican Ochoa in 2007.
Gulbis, meanwhile, has become one of the top drawcards on
the LPGA Tour with her pin-up looks and boasts a huge fan
base.
She is optimistic that women's golf will continue to grow
and that she might one day be competing for an Olympic gold
medal.
Would she be in favour of golf in the Olympics?
"Without question," she replied. "I think that's in the
future for us."
